Hayward is known as the "Heart of the Bay," not only because of its close proximity to San Francisco, Oakland, and San Jose, but also because of its extensive freeways and bus line transportation systems. This includes two BART stations, an Amtrak station and the Hayward Executive Airport. Hayward boasts a pedestrian-friendly downtown with a new Civic Center as its focal point, and the town's multitude of annual events embrace its rich, diverse community. Residents and visitors alike can participate in the yearly Martin Luther King Jr. and Cinco de Mayo celebrations, along with 4th of July and Veterans Day parades, Zucchini Festival, Business Expos, Blues Festivals and its own monthly street parties. While close enough to enjoy anything the Bay Area has to offer, Hayward is rich in its own style and is a gem in its own right.
